The Pilate Inscription

by Matt Wright | 18 May 2022 | Picture of the Week

This hugely-significant stone was unearthed at Caesarea Maritima, Israel, in 1961. Discovered in excavations at the Roman theatre, it identified Pontius Pilate as the prefect of Judea during the reign of Tiberius over Rome.

The Pilate Inscription is part of the collection at Israel Museum, Jerusalem

Pilate was thus confirmed as a genuine historical figure, who governed Judea at the time of Jesus’ ministry. Before the discovery of this stone, Pilate’s very existence had been called into question by critical academics.
