Gath: Goliath’s Hometown

by Matt Wright | 14 Sep 2022 | Bible Places, Picture of the Week

This photo depicts a slice of Philistine country – Tel-Tzafit – often identified as the ancient city-state of Gath. From a biblical standpoint, Gath has multiple claims to fame. It was one of the last holdouts of the Anakim, a race of giants (Josh 11:22). It hosted the Ark of the Covenant for a time (1 Sam 5:8-9). It was home to Goliath, David’s enormous adversary (1 Sam 17:4). And it was later a city where David sought refuge (1 Sam 27:2-4).
