Babylon’s Processional Way

by Matt Wright | 16 Jun 2022 | Babylonians, Bible Places, Mesopotamia, Picture of the Week

This extravagantly-decorated wall lined the edge of the ‘Processional Way’, a main road in the ancient city of Babylon. Extending almost 1000 metres, the wall prominently featured lions as a symbol of the goddess Ishtar. It is possible that many Jews traversed the Processional Way after God exiled them to Babylon in the sixth century BC (see Jeremiah 29).

The Processional Way’s wall system featured at least 120 lions. This part of the wall can be found in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin. Photo by Dr Avishai Teicher (CC BY 4.0, ed)
