Women Harvesting Near Bethlehem

For millennia, wheat harvests have been a regular fixture in Bethlehem. This photo shows a 1987 harvest in the area.

In modern times, much of Bethlehem's traditional farmland has been built over.

Stone field boundaries west of Bethlehem.

Stone Boundaries West of Bethlehem

An ancient practice for marking field boundaries was to use stones cleared from the field itself. This may be how Boaz's part of the field was delineated (Ruth 2:3).

Field Shelter

Ruth may have taken a break in a field shelter like this one (Ruth 2:7), though the Hebrew word here could also be translated 'house'. This 1940 photo was taken near the Sepphoris threshing floors in Galilee.

Iron I Jars.

Jars from Ruth's Era

These jars (ca. 1200-1000 BC) may be like the ones Ruth drank from (Ruth 2:9). The jars shown here were photographed at the Benshoof Museum in Israel.

Threshing in Israel, ca. 1900-1920.

Threshing

A woman threshing in the Holy Land, sometime between 1900-1920. This gives some idea of how Ruth could have separated the edible grain from the stalks she collected.
