The Dead Sea – an incredibly salty lake south-east of Jerusalem – is the lowest point on Earth. Sitting deep in the Dead Sea Rift, its shoreline is over 400 metres below sea level. Being this low-lying, the lake has no outlet. Its water level remains largely stable though, as toasty air temperatures see the lake evaporate millions of litres daily. Large quantities of salt are left behind (see photo), making the lake uninhabitable for fish. According to Ezekiel 47, God will one day restore the lake to fresh water.
